Carlisle Racecourse

The Carlisle races date back to an era when Elizabeth I was on the throne of England. The first 'Carlisle Bell' race took place in 1599, when winning horses were awarded bells as a prize. The Cumberland Plate race also dates back to that time. The famous Red Rum won three races at Carlisle prior to his three Grand National wins, and Carlisle Racecourse was also the first racecourse to have a tote.

The course at Carlisle

Carlisle Racecourse is a racing venue for thoroughbred horses situated in the picturesque village of Blackwell. The course is one mile five furlongs in length and is pear shaped. There is an extension for the sprint races on the home straight which veers dramatically uphill. The first tote in England was launched at Carlisle races on 2nd July 1929. Carlisle betting arguably offered better odds as a result of the variety of bets using the tote.
